How to Defragment Your Hard Disk

There is a few moving parts in a computer that can wear down or break down, but the computer hard drive is quite an exception, it has many moving parts that must operate very precisely to locate and store data efficiently. This fact makes the hard drive the biggest suspect when the entire system performance is dropping. If it takes too long for hard drive to provide programs the data they need, the processing speed will be affected and change markedly.

Well, what is the solution? Disk defragmentation has been proved to be the prime cure for a laggardly computer. Even If you asked computer expert for the solution, most of them may probably go for disk defragmentation first before taking any further diagnoses. As nowadays the hard drive becomes even bigger and faster, that makes defragmentation a less effective solution as it would probably take a long time to finish the whole defrag process. However, defragmentation is still the direct and simple way to speed up and optimize your computer system.

It is very easy to defrag the computer hard disk by using the Windows build-in Defragment, simply open my computer, right click on the disk volume that you want to defrag, go to properties---Tools---click Defragment Now, generally you would gain approximately 10%--30% performance improvement after the defragmentation, but it pretty much depends on what kind of condition your computer was. There are several limitations to the defrag function in XP. For instance, it can only defrag one volume at a time. There is no scheduling function in this utility as well, you have to reach the Windows Scheduler to run Defrag from the command line. However it tend to be a little bit complicated and inconvenience for most of the computer users, In Vista system, things got improve in its Defrag utility, it is much easier to use. You can schedule defragmentation to run at a time which is a significant advantage over the XP version

If the size of the hard drive in your computer is up to 300G, it is recommended to apply special designed defrag program such as Perfect Disk, Advanced Defrag, DisKeeper or O&O defrag, you may find and download them easily through the internet. These program has the whole package do help you handle the defrag job well, more importantly, they are much faster then the traditional Microsoft build-in defrag utility as they apply better defrag technology, usually these special designed defrag program will take only 5 to 10 min to finish the defragmentation for each hard drive volume. This speed is much pleasant and acceptable. Another different is that these programs equip with several extra and useful features such as individual file defrag, file filtration and defrag report which makes the defragment even more customizable and flexible. Well, as people say, there is no such thing as a free lunch, usually you will have to paid tens of dollar for such programs, if you are not satisfy with the build-in defrag utility, to purchase such program by spending few dollars is also a good option in my opinion.

Computer getting lower? Well, go defragmentation you computer first, maybe you will get beat all improvement in the performance.
