External Hard Drive Recovery

External Hard Drive Recovery refers to the retrieval of lost data on a computer's external hard drive. Data loss is a very misunderstood concept, and very little information has been made available to the public about data loss. The little information that is available is inconsistent, and due to mixed messages, users will find it difficult to evaluate their data loss situations, and will make educated decisions to try and recover it.

Most data lost on a hard drive is not lost at all, the user has simply been unable to access it. Because users are not aware of their options, many gigabytes of data have been lost and the user has given up any hope of recovery.

Physical damage will always cause some data loss, and in most cases the logical structures of the file system are damaged as well. Logical damage must be dealt with before any files can be recovered.

Logical damage is mainly caused by power outages which prevent file system structures from being completely written to the storage medium. This can leave the file system in an inconsistent state, which in turn can cause a variety of problems such as infinitely recursion directories, drives that report negative amounts of free space, system crashes or an actual loss of data.

Various programs exist to correct these problems, and most operating systems will have a rudimentary repair tool for their native file systems.

Many computer users rely on back-ups and redundant storage technologies in the event of data loss, and for many of them these back-up and storage plans worked okay. Back-up software can become corrupted, and users accidentally backup corrupted or incorrect information. Backups are not infallible and should not be solely relied upon.

Laptops, desktops, personal computers and digital cameras and all spinning magnetic media can fail from the following:

• Invalid disk system
• BIOS error message
• Noisy hard drive disk
• Logical corruption to the file system

In data recovery labs, highly qualified engineers look closely at all components both internally and externally. If a failed component is discovered it is replaced and the hard drive retested to functionality. This is then moved to a cloning and imaging department where an image is created of the media from the beginning to the end of the user data area.

Typical errors of a hard disk can include overheating of the spindle motor chip which is self evident by visual inspection of the PCB.

If you are in need of this service check out our product pages, they contain many companies that specialise in this. John Cheesman writes about External Hard Drive Recovery. Visit the Businessmagnet product page for details and suppliers of External Hard Drive Recovery.

Windows XP Running Slow - How to Make Your Windows PC Run Like a New Computer

Is your windows XP computer running slow? Many people complain that their computer is too slow and there are some ways you can speed it up and make it run ten times faster. After a while it will slow down even further, but you can fix this without any computer knowledge and just by following these steps.

#1 Run windows update before doing anything else. This will make sure you have the latest updates for windows XP. This by itself will not make much difference to performance, but with the rest of the steps it will.

#2 Remove any programs you do not use. Windows XP uses a lot of memory by itself and the more programs you add the slower it will run. Many programs consume memory when they are not even running. Eventually you will start seeing the dreaded virtual memory errors telling you there is not enough memory.

#3 Run windows disk defragmenter software. This arranges all the files and folders for each program. Imagine trying to read a book and having to go backwards and forwards to find the next page. This is what doing this will fix for your computer.

#4 Run a free Windows XP registry scan. Doing this after the first two steps will enable you to find any corruption and damage in your registry which is causing windows XP to start up slowly and run slowly. It will also find all the entries for programs and hardware that are no longer installed and other windows files that can be removed. All these errors can be fixed automatically.

Free Antivirus Review - Find the Best Free Antivirus

Many people choose to or want to choose the free route when it comes to computer security. This can be tricky though because the market for free and commercial security applications is enormous. Achieving effective security for free is possible, and a good free anti virus program is the biggest contributor.

The marks of a good anti-virus program are
a) High detection rate
b) Low false detection rates
c) Low demand on system resources
d) Simple to use

Based on these factors, I have looked at many free anti virus programs, and the following 3 antiviruses are clearly the best 3 anti-virus programs available:

#1 Best Free Antivirus: Avira AntiVir Personal
Avira Antivir has the highest detection rate and lowest demand on your computer of all of the free anti virus programs. In fact, AntiVir regularly outperforms many commercial anti virus programs. Make sure you keep it updated, and be cautious because it does not support antispyware.

#2 Best Free Antivirus: Avast! Home Edition
Avast! includes support against spyware, rootkits, and other threats in addition to viruses. It also has fantastic detection rates, but takes a little more of a toll on your system's resources then Avira.

#3 Best Free Antivirus: AVG Anti-virus Free Edition
AVG has a slightly lower detection rate than the other two anti-virus programs, and is more demanding on your system. It does support antispyware (like Avast!), and requires very little maintenance as it can update itself. AVG is a great solution for the individual who is less tech savvy.

These three anti virus programs comprise the best free antivirus solutions on the market. To complete your security solution, back one of them up with a trusted anti spyware program. With this under your belt, you are well on the way to free, effective computer security.

Lost File Recovery - What is the Best File Recovery Software For Windows?

The best file recovery software for restoring deleted files should have the ability to recover all your deleted files and folders. Data files, graphic files, multi media files, zipped files and emails should all be easily and quickly recovered with the power of such an application. There are causes for files getting deleted accidentally - systems and software failure, virus and disk drive corruption plus careless deletion of files or folders. What ever the file deletion reason is the application should act as a safety net for home users and professionals alike to save their deleted files.

After a file is deleted it typically moves into the recycle bin and later is erased from there also. But the file contents persist in the drive till it is overwritten by other content. The best file recovery software algorithm looks for file content that is still there on disk and gathers them to make up the recovered file. Even if some of the content has been overwritten this application should be built to put together a partially recovered file which you can use as a starting point to rebuild your lost content. It should be easy to use and you will not need to possess any technical expertise to use this software.

Online downloading of the application should be available at an affordable cost. Not only this - if you are dissatisfied with the product for any reason you should get your money back. A downloadable demo version for users to understand the application features would be an added advantage.

Some features a good restore software application should have:

  • Best file recovery software should recover files from many drive types like hard drives, zip drives, USB external drives, removable flash drives and more
  • Be able to recover files deleted accidentally due to any cause including system failure
  • You would be able to scan a standard hard drive in a few minutes
  • Application should let you use a quick scan or advanced scan option to scan files
  • Should have ability to recover multiple files as a batch
  • You should be able to scan all the files and directories in any selected drive
  • Should allow you to use partial or full file names while scanning for them
  • Disks with bad sectors should also supported
  • Application should use a non destructive algorithm in order to ensure there is no danger of content being destroyed during recovery

Delete Internet Explorer History

Most people believe that to delete the Internet Explorer history is a simple process.

They drop down the tools section and the first page appears.

They click "clear history " and believe that is the end of the story.

Unfortunately, all your history is still on your computer, you just can`t see it through the browser any more . This is because some generally inaccessible files one of which is the index dat file.

It resides in C:\DocumentsandSettings\User name\Cookies

I have worked in I.T for many years now. When I began there were things I didn't know. Back then, I thought you clear the history and that is the end of the story.

Perhaps this is what you are thinking right now.

I remember a chap was accused of viewing certain material on the internet - which he denied. A senior I.T.Manager gave me the poor chaps hard drive one day and asked me to set it up for testing - which I did. To my absolute amazement, he recovered every single page viewed, from the internet history. As I was new at the time, this manager showed me some software on his own personal laptop, which prevented data recovery.

He went on to explain, that the index file had to be overwritten, not once, but many times. This is because when a file is deleted, the operating system (e.g Windows XP) doesn't remove the information from the hard drive. All it does, is make it disappear from one application, namely, Internet Explorer. The memory allocated to this "space" on the hard drive is still very real and has not gone away. It is rather like taking an audio cassette out of the player and saying that the music on the tape has gone. Sure, if you play the machine with no cassette in it, it certainly "sounds" as if the music has gone. The cassette itself has to be erased, either with silence, or some other music to replace it. This is what has to happen to the index dat file.

If your laptop were to be stolen, what information could be recovered from your internet history? The modern day laptop thief is armed with data recovery software - freely available on the web. It is no longer just the Police or Government Bodies, that have access to forensic software. From a business perspective, a thief would potentially have access to your business contacts, competitors and even financial data.

Doctors and Lawyers invariably have confidential and sensitive data about clients stored on web pages. It would not take a thief long to retrieve this data from the web, now they know where to look. So what is the answer?

I believe that the general public are in the dark about so many aspects of computers and the way they work You need to get some privacy software which overwrites any file you desire.

This could be a deleted file form the recycle bin, internet explorer history - in fact any file you see fit. This type of software is not expensive.

Sure there are free ones out there - but why run the risk? This article was written not to alarm - but to inform.

Find Email Address Free - Free Search Tips

Most of the services online these days are already asking for your credit card. This is usually the case if you are going to search for people online and their email address too. So if you are in search for a person's email address for a special occasion, you may immediately be asked for dollars out of your pocket.

But don't pull that dollar just yet as you can still search the internet for email address finders that offer free services. In this way, you will be able to save some money in searching that important person. Here are some tips on how you can find a free service on the internet.

First one is to try searching online for free email address lookup services. By simply typing the words "email address lookup for free," you will be generated a lot of search results. These services will be able to provide you the email addresses through a person's name. However, getting this free service may not give you additional information that you might want to know like new addresses or contact number.

The second way is to use the social networking pages. You can type in their names and most of the time, people are showing their email addresses. The only problem that you may encounter is whether a person opted not to show his or her email, then you will not be able to reach them.

The next tip that you will get is through the email hosts' sites. They have a database of their members. So you can type in again the name and the possible current location and it will show the email address profile of the person. There are a number of email providers for you to search so you can find email addresses online.

The only important thing for you to do is to make sure that you search diligently online for these services. And with all the companies on the vast world of internet, you will certainly find a website that will give you the results that you are looking for.

Tape Data Recovery Software

Tapes are used to store large amount of data, but the tape media can get corrupt due to unknown reasons. The inaccessible data is then recovered through Physical and Logical data recovery techniques.

Tape drives are installed in the cleanest environment and require high quality, cleaning on a regular basis, and proper handling of the tape media. Improper or poor usage, handling, and storing of tape drives lead to tape drive corruptions or damages.

Tape drives are developed to be operated in clean environment; dust particles, fibers and airborne particles can cause damage to the tape drive. The tape drives need clean environment because when a tape is installed to a tape drive, the clearance between the heads and the tape is measured in microns thus the particles can damage the tape or the head if they come in contact with either.

The tape drive is generally used to save and restore system data files, to archive important records and to distribute operating system software upgrades. The needs are great but also are the consequences. Tape media can get damage or corrupt due to mishandling, improper usage, damaged tape headers, erased tape drives, broken or de-spooled backup tapes, failed backup systems and tape libraries, unexpected system shutdowns or system failures.

In this scenario, tape data recovery proves effective and user can always get back the lost data. There are two primary tape data recovery procedures ? Physical and Logical.

Physical data recovery comes into existence when there is physical problem with the tape media. This type of data recovery includes dealing with deteriorating magnetic coatings, broken tapes, twisted or folded tapes, cracked or sealed cartridges and also the tape media affected due to fire, water, mud, debris etc.

Logical data recovery is the most difficult and expensive data recovery process. This process includes recovery of files logically from the tape drives. Data which was successfully recorded on the media but now cannot be read for unknown reasons is recovered. This type of data recovery involves usage of tape recovery software. The tape data recovery software effectively restores and recovers the lost and inaccessible files and folders.

The tape recovery utilities like Kernel tape recovery software effectively recovers missing, lost, deleted file (s) and folder (s) from all types of corrupt, damaged tapes like DLT, LTO, AIT, DAT and every other tape media type.

Small Business Owners: How To Prepare For Data Loss And Disaster Recovery

A Data Disaster Can Occur Anywhere, Anytime

When the subject of natural or man-made disasters comes up, a common and very human reaction is to assume, "It won't happen to me."

Unfortunately for many small business owners and IT managers, this is an assumption they've lived to regret. Each year, according to the Business Continuity Institute, about one in five businesses faces a major disruption such as data loss due to power outage or a natural disaster that destroys an office.

Yes, the consequences can be devastating. And, at a time when IT systems and networks have become indispensable to nearly every small business, a major IT disruption can result in a crippling revenue loss, an array of additional expenses, a major productivity drop, delayed collections, and even a damaged reputation that weakens vital relationships with customers, suppliers, partners, creditors, and others.

The solution is proper planning: a disaster preparedness and data recovery strategy with an implementation plan that ensures that the business survives and recovers from even the most severe occurrence. Four key issues deserve special attention.

Performing a Business Impact Analysis

A business impact analysis allows you to identify both tangible and intangible effects on business processes, functions, or departments over time. The analysis allows management to identify recovery priorities and develop an effective recovery strategy. The result of the process also supplies the data to help define an appropriate disaster recovery program budget.

For IT systems and networks, a business impact analysis is invaluable in two ways.

1. It identifies business-critical applications and the systems they run on.

2. It finds areas of vulnerability within the environment to address.

Never Underestimate the Importance of Backup

It doesn't take an earthquake, hurricane, or fire to destroy data critical to your business' success: a new virus, a leaky roof, or employee mistakes can do the job. A comprehensive strategy for backing up critical data is a must for today's small businesses.

The most effective strategies address:

1. Data Prioritization: identifying and deciding which data cannot be lost under any circumstances

2. Testing: Regular checks to make sure backup and restoration will work properly

3. Off-site Storage: storing tapes off-site and taking other steps to quarantine disaster before it happens

Work on the Plan as a "Living Document"

Once a disaster preparedness and recovery plan has been researched, designed, developed, implemented, and tested there is a common desire to declare the job done. However, as your business evolves, your IT environment must also evolve. Your IT team should continually develop new strategies to grow your disaster recovery plan.

Seeking Outside Help

It makes sense for small businesses to turn to outside IT service providers to help address disaster recovery requirements.

1. Most small businesses don't have the in-house staff to conduct a thorough assessment, select the right solutions or continuously upgrade them to keep pace with their business requirements.

2. An outside firm can evaluate business practices without bias.

3. As specialists, they have experience with a variety of approaches and effective solutions.

Look for an organization with:

- A strategic perspective that considers your company's key business goals

- A comprehensive assessment and solution development methodology

- Sufficient experience working with your industry

- The ability to provide remote managed services

- Proven expertise both in disaster preparedness and disaster recovery
