Data Link Layer of the OSI Reference Model

Data link layer is the second layer among the seven layers in the OSI reference model. This layer ensures that the data from the physical layer is error free and in case there are errors, it takes corrective measures to rectify them. This layer is responsible for transferring data between the network nodes.

The manner in which data flows in this particular format is frames. Also, the data transfer happens between any two adjacent nodes in case of Wide Area Network and between the network nodes in the same Local Area Network.

There are some protocols that govern how data should move between such nodes, they are:

PPP: PPP stands for Point to Point Protocol. This particular protocol is used in establishing an active connection between the consecutive nodes. This is also responsible in providing authentication, encryption, privacy and also compression. It is used in many connections such as serial cable, telephone links, cellular telephone, and also fibre optic links such as SONET, etc.

HDLC: The full form of this is High-Level Data Link Control. This is a bit oriented synchronous data link layer protocol that is known to provide both connection and also connectionless services. This particular protocol can also be used to establish a single point to multipoint connection. It is mainly used to interconnect two devices using the asynchronous balanced mode or the ABM.

ADCCP: Advanced Data Communication Control Protocol is also another bit-oriented data link layer protocol that helps in both point to point and also point to multipoint of data frames that seem to be containing the error controlling information. This protocol is responsible in placing data on the network and also ensures its safe delivery to the destination. It is functionally almost the same as the HDLC protocol.
